Winterville – London’s Alternative Winter Wonderland

If you’ve been searching high and low for an alternative festive experience, you needn’t look any further. Winterville opened last week at East London’s hallowed turf at Victoria Park, and you can’t help but wonder why it’s taken the East side of the capital this long to do their own version of Winter Wonderland.

As you enter beneath the Winterville Festival gateway, past a mildly interested security guard, it does feel as if you’ve entered one of the many boutique festivals that happen at Victoria Park across the Summer, including Field Day and Lovebox – two years ago we branded a taxi photo booth for Timeout Magazine, you can watch the video here.

Amongst the traditional fairground rides, the ice rink and the roller disco, the overwhelming whiff of mulled wine in the air is enough to prove Winterville has all the makings to be a charming Christmas market without the antithesis of one of the other corporate Christmas theme parks.

Fueling the fun is a fantastic selection of street food vendors to keep the health conscious east London hipsters happy. Winterville’s food market is wholefood heaven, a sumptuous mix of culinary delights for vegetarians, vegans, raw and wheat and gluten free foodies.
For those less health conscious, they can seek refuge from Voodoo Ray’s pizza stand, the Cheese Truck, Smokestak delicious toasties and pulled pork stands aplenty.

Winterville has also recognised there will be floods of the East London ‘Cool’ entering throughout the festive season and has given them their very own bar, ‘Bar Humbug’. When the evening draws to a close and the mulled wine or craft beer sinks in, the atmospheric wood paneled and mirrored Dutch Spiegeltent, directly opposite Bar Humbug, will provide live entertainment until close. From live music to nights hosted by Bugged Out!, to rebel bingo and family friendly pantomimes, the Spiegeltent is a must at Winterville.

Aside from the rides and even the huge ferris wheel, Winterville has curated a number of pop-up installations for the whole family, most notably, The House of Fairy Tales, full of imaginative creative activities for children, Santa’s grotto and romantic horsedrawn carriage rides taking in the park’s lake and pagoda.
