Principia Launch Event at the Science Museum

On December 15th 2015 astronaut Tim Peake will make history by becoming the European Space Agency’s first British astronaut to launch into space for a six-month Principia mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Mission ‘Principia’ will use the unique environment of space to run experiments as well as try out new technologies for future human exploration missions.

To celebrate Tim Peake’s trip to the ISS, the Science Museum, in partnership with Discover South Kensington, are hosting a FREE day and evening of events centered around Exhibition Road and includes activities for families and school groups during the day followed by late night celebration for adults – there will even be a number of guest appearances from past and present astronauts.
The Principia launch day programme includes a live screening of the launch (10:30am) and meet and greets with space experts, plus a number of activities for families including the Destination Space Show, drama characters of Gene Cernan, Svetlana Savitskaya and Yuri Gagarin. The ‘Principia Lates’ event will continue the celebrations at the Science Museum, including the first video of Tim Peake on the ISS – shown from 18:30.
The evening will be complete with talks on meteorites by Scientists from the Natural History Museum, a pop-up planetarium from the Imperial College, ‘Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age’ open all day and much more.

To capture the day we are teaming up with the Science Museum by installing our hashtag printing station that will collect photos on Twitter and Instagram using the all important hashtag #Principia. We’ve worked with the Science Museum in October 2015 for their #SMLates event, find out more here.

Wave goodbye to Tim as he embarks on his 5 month mission to the International Space Station. There will be launch events held in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London as well as at 17 Science and Discovery centres around the UK. The launch will be screened live on BBC One with the docking being shown on BBC Two.
